The special allure of Eastern and Western cultures in Macau can be felt from its architecture to the daily life of the local community, attracting not only tourists but filmmakers and dramatists alike.

Due to rapid development, the city has undergone dramatic change, bringing it ever greater attention as more and more people from around the world come to admire its UNESCO World Heritage-listed sites as well as other unique attractions.

The Hong Kong Movie "Look for a Star" prominently features Macau, and popular Korean drama "Gung" also favors the city, "starring" as it does, the beautifully compact church of St. Francis Xavier (built in 1928) in Coloane Village. The light yellow walls, cool corridors and Portuguese-style architecture of the venerable old church compose a beautiful and elegant picture, as does the surrounding village itself, which even today retains its centuries-old fishing tradition.

Felicidade Street was once the most prosperous commercial district in the city. Although the streets are short, its traditional two-storey buildings and its sharp red window shutters are irrepressibly romantic. Felicidade Street (The Street of Happiness) was once the domain of the "ladies of the night" and has a truly "colourful" history. The Hong Kong Movie "2046," directed by Wong Kar Wai, features an old hotel on Felicidade Street, whereas famous movies such as "Shanghai Surprise" (starring Madonna and Sean Penn) and "Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom" were also partly filmed in this district.

The century-old Guia Lighthouse is also a favorite spot for shooting movies. It is the oldest lighthouse in China and a World Heritage site, as is the Chapel of Our Lady of Guia next to it. This windswept place has always evoked a feeling of romance, which was just the ticket for the director of the Hong Kong movie "Isabella" and featured the atmospheric Travessa da Paixao ('Love Street') located behind the dramatic Ruins of St. Paul's. Travessa da Paixao is actually a very tiny street but its aging pink and yellow Portuguese buildings suggest both passionate and gentle love and exude an extraordinary atmosphere under its lamps at night.
