Weather forecast for the Asia-Pacific region
Associated Press
2009-07-30 11:41 AM
A trough of low pressure will linger over the Sea of Japan on Friday and continue kicking up wet weather over the surrounding countries.

Expect diminishing showers over the Korean peninsula and northeastern China, while most of Japan will see continual showers throughout the day.

Tokyo will remain wet and dreary with highs in the upper 20s Celsius.

To the west, a low pressure system will track eastward from Mongolia and produce a strong front that will extend over northern and southern China. This will kick up scattered showers and thunderstorms, with some areas experiencing periods of heavy rainfall.

Beijing will remain just ahead of this front and see mostly sunny skies with highs approaching 32 C.

To the south, onshore flow from the South China Sea will continue pushing warm and moist air over southeastern China. Expect thunderstorm development over Shanghai and Hong Kong and highs remaining in the mid-20s C.

In Southeast Asia, strong storms with heavy downpours will persist along the coasts of Burma and Thailand.

Australia, meanwhile, will see mild conditions as a large high pressure system dominates the country's weather. However, well south of the continent, a low pressure system will push scattered showers over Tasmania, New Zealand and even along the coasts of Victoria and New South Wales.

Expect light rain in Sydney with highs in the upper teens.
