World No. 1s Lee Chong Wei of Malaysia and Zhou Mi of Hong Kong will not win their first world titles this year after being eliminated in the quarterfinals on Friday.

Chong Wei, runner-up at the Beijing Olympics, fell to sixth-seeded Sony Dwi Kuncoro of Indonesia 21-16, 14-21, 21-12.

Dwi Kuncoro, a three-time Asian champion and Athens Olympic bronze medalist, moved on to a semifinal against Olympic champ Lin Dan, who was trying to become the first man to win three world crowns. Dwi Kuncoro lost to Lin in straight sets in the last worlds final two years ago.

Two-time defending champ Lin had to pull out his best to see off third-seeded Peter Gade of Denmark 22-20, 21-16.

The other semifinal will also be a China-Indonesia clash between second-seeded Chen Jin and No. 4 Taufik Hidayat, a former world and Olympic champion.

Chen nailed Indonesia's Simon Santoso 21-10, 21-13 and Hidayat stopped Denmark's Jan Jorgensen, the only unseeded player to make the last eight, 21-19, 21-19.

Zhou's 21-15, 21-18 defeat to fifth-seeded Xie Xingfang boosted Xie's hopes of a third women's world title.

Xie, runner-up at the Olympics last year, will next meet Pi Hongyang, who fought back to defeat Germany's Juliane Schenk 15-21, 21-15, 21-19.

Hongyang, Chinese-born but representing France, was the only non-Chinese to reach the last four.

Second-seeded Wang Lin rallied from 10-2 down in the second game to beat sixth-seeded Saina Nehwal of India 21-16, 21-19 in their first match Nehwal beat Wang in the Indonesian Open final in June.

Wang will meet No. 7 Lu Lan, who downed third-seeded Tine Rasmussen of Denmark 21-15, 21-13.
