The head of Poland's land forces accused the government of failing to properly equip Polish soldiers in Afghanistan in comments published Monday.Gen. Waldemar Skrzypczak said that for three years the government has rebuffed military requests for unmanned reconnaissance aircraft, modern helicopters and other equipment in Afghanistan. He blamed officials with limited knowledge of warfare.
"We ask for weapons, but everything drowns in bureaucratic procedure," Skrzypczak was quoted by the daily Dziennik as saying in an interview.
Defense Minister Bogdan Klich said Skrzypczak has never informed him of any problems with equipping the soldiers in Afghanistan.
The government had considered boosting Poland's 2,000-strong contingent in Afghanistan with another 200 soldiers now on standby in Poland.
Prime Minister Donald Tusk said last week, however, he was recently convinced the mission needs "more equipment and not more soldiers."
Ten Polish soldiers have died since 2002 while serving in the NATO-led mission in Afghanistan.
