Beijing-based China Mobile Ltd., the world's largest mobile carrier, will work with Taiwan's Industrial Technology Research Institute (ITRI) to develop 4G technologies, Wang Jianzhou, chairman of the state-run Chinese company, said yesterday.During a visit to the Hsinchu Science Park in Hsinchu City, northern Taiwan, Wang also confirmed that he will meet with Morris Chang, founder and chairman of the world's largest chipmaker Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co. (TSMC).
Wang is exploring opportunities to forge alliances with local high-tech enterprises to open up the vast mainland China market to advanced telecommunication products.
Since his arrival in Taiwan Aug. 21, Wang has signed a memorandum with Taiwan's handset maker HTC Corp. to jointly develop smartphones and relevant technologies, and met with many local high-tech tycoons, including Chunghwa Telecom Chairman Lu Shyue-ching and Acer Inc. Chairman J.T. Wang, for talks on possible cooperation.
At the science park, Wang reiterated that his visit was aimed at seeking cooperation ventures to allow his company to open China's 3G market. The network infrastructure in China has expanded quickly but the development of smartphones has failed to catch up with the pace of infrastructure expansion, he said.
Wang said he has "great hopes" for strategic alliances with companies within the Hsinchu Science Park.
At the park, Wang called at MediaTek Inc., Taiwan's leading fabless semiconductor company for wireless communications and digital multimedia solutions.
