France to launch flu vaccine campaign in October
Associated Press

French health officials say the government will launch a nationwide voluntary vaccination campaign against swine flu in the fall.

French Health Minister Roselyne Bachelot says that vaccinations should begin in mid-October as soon as vaccines being developed by four leading laboratories are licensed by medical authorities.

Bachelot said the campaign will be free of charge and will not be obligatory. But she urged citizens to get the shots out of "altruism" to protect themselves and others.

"We are getting ready for a flu that could be very serious for those with risk factors," she said.

French authorities have registered hundreds of confirmed cases of the virus at least 10 cases of swine flu deaths in metropolitan France and its foreign territories.
