Defending champion Christian Vande Velde retired from the Tour of Missouri because of a hand injury on Tuesday.Vande Velde was part of a pileup that involved more than a dozen riders near the finish of Monday's first stage at St. Louis. The American was injured sliding into a fire hydrant.
He tested the hand near the beginning of Tuesday's stage but decided the pain was too much to continue.
Tuesday's second stage was a 112.4-mile (181-kilometer) ride from Ste. Genevieve to Cape Girardeau, along the Mississippi River.
