Kaohsiung, Sept. 16 (CNA) An orchid design competition to be held Oct. 3 at an orchid biotech park in Tainan County, southern Taiwan will offer a first prize of NT$1 million, the organizers said Wednesday. The competition will be part of a series of activities to mark the transformation of the Taiwan Orchid Plantation into a leisure and tourism park.
The first round of the competition will be a bonsai design competition featuring orchid compositions, with 20 entries to be selected to advance to the second round, Luo Cheng-en, chief planner at the company that runs the park, said Wednesday.
In the second round, contestants will be offered NT$2,000 in vouchers to buy flowers and other floral materials to be used for their designs in the orchid exhibition zone, Luo said.
A total of 10 finalists will be selected and will receive prize money ranging from NT$5,000 to NT$80,000. The top three winners will be given the opportunity to work as floral arts designers for one year in the park, he added.
To encourage more people to get into the orchid industry, the event organizers will offer a first prize of NT$1 million to help the winner open an orchid store for direct sales, Luo said.
The orchid plantation is not only open to growers for the cultivation of orchids, but also has a big exhibition hall to host annual international orchid shows.
To expand and upgrade the functions of the plantation, the company that runs it decided to open the hall to the public for various types of exhibitions, Luo said.
