Taipei, Oct. 1 (CNA) Taiwan's first all-male dance company "Horse" will stage its highly acclaimed production "Velocity" at the FirstWorks Festival in Providence, Rhode Island on Oct. 24, company manager Fred Chuang said Thursday.

While visiting Taiwan early this year, the festival's artistic director Kathleen Pletcher invited "Horse" to present "Velocity" at the Providence festival, an annual cultural event which was first launched in 2004, Chuang said.

In the production "Velocity", the dance group explores how the frenetic nature of contemporary society pulls people and things apart. The production synthesizes elements of experimental theater, drama and mime.

The choreography reflects the observations of the young "Horse" members on evolution, progress and loss in the speed of movements, according to Chuang.

In April 2008, the overseas premiere of "Velocity" in New York's Joyce Theater won the young company a review in the New York Times. On April 18, 2008, Art critic Jennifer Dunning said in the New York Times: "The evening-length work that Horse presented in this American debut, looked essentially like a series of favorite bits, set to well-chosen music by composers ranging from Mozart and Bach to John Cage and Michael Gordon. The piece ran out of steam toward the end, but until then it was a feast of evocative, playful small dances showcasing the supple physicality and subtle dramatic gifts of its performers." The visit to Providence will be "Horse" dance company's third visit to the U.S. since it was founded in 2007. After its well acclaimed performance in April 2007 at the Mandance Project at Joyce Theater, the five-man troupe was again invited to present their new production "Bones" at the 2009 Mandance Project at the Joyce Theater in April.

FirstWorks is a multidimensional arts organization recognized with eight national endowment of the arts grants in the U.S. Since 2004, the organization has collaborated with the City of Providence's Department of Art, Culture and Tourism to present an annual art festival. The 2009 festival, Sept. 24–Nov. 15, features dance, music, theater and interactive installations.

Upon returning from the U.S., the group will be preparing for the premiere of a new production "Growing Up", according to Chuang. Four performances of "Growing Up" are scheduled from Dec. 4-6 at the Taipei National University of the Arts.

"Velocity" is a joint production of choreographers/dancers Chen Wu-kang, Wu Wei-chia, Yang Yu-min, Huang Yi, Chang Tzu-ling and Kao Yung-yu. (By Lillian Lin)
