Tokyo, Oct. 6 (CNA) In a move aimed at further cementing relations with Japan, Taiwan is opening an additional representative office in the Hokkaido Prefecture capital of Sapporo, officials at the Taipei Economic and Cultural Representative Office (TECRO) in Japan said Tuesday.

With the official opening of TECRO's Sapporo branch Oct. 24, to be presided over by Legislative Yuan President Wang Jin- pyng, the number of Taiwan's representative offices in Japan will increase to six -- in Tokyo, Yokahama, Naha, Sapporo, Osaka and Fukuoka.

The officials said the Sapporo branch aims especially to serve the 300,000 Taiwanese tourists who visit Hokkaido each year, as well as to provide assistance to Taiwanese fishing vessels and fishermen who operate in northern Pacific waters and use the port of Kurhiro in Hokkaido as a major operations base.
