Four suspected kidnappers who allegedly posed as drug cartel members when demanding ransoms have been killed in a prison fight in northern Mexico.

The four had been ordered to stand trial last week, and one of them said he feared for his life. Authorities say the four had posed as members of a notorious cartel hit squad, the Zetas.

Prison director Luis Roberto Montes said Wednesday that three inmates who were injured are under investigation. The fight broke out Tuesday in Nuevo Laredo, a city across the border from Laredo, Texas. The inmates used improvised weapons.

Investigators say the kidnap gang's last victim was a dentist whose family paid $25,000 and three cars for his freedom.
