Officials say Japan's foreign minister made a surprise visit to the Afghan capital to meet with the Afghan President.Fumio Shimizu, Japan's deputy ambassador in Afghanistan, says the one-day trip on Sunday is aimed at strengthening of Japanese efforts to help stabilize the country. Foreign Minister Katsuya Okada is also meeting with other officials in capital.
Japan has committed to paying all Afghan police salaries for six months and is funding a number of infrastructure, agriculture and education projects in the country. Shimizu said Okada's visit shows that Afghanistan is a priority for the Japanese government.
Okada is also scheduled to fly to Pakistan.
