EU Parliament leader pushes Ukraine on reforms
Associated Press
2009-10-15 10:03 PM
The EU Parliament's president has urged Ukrainian President Viktor Yushchenko to step up political and economic reforms.

Jerzy Buzek says such reforms are necessary for Ukraine to deepen its ties with the 27-nation bloc. He says the EU wants to see an "independent, democratic, free-market Ukraine."

He says the EU also wants to see fair, transparent and democratic presidential elections, which are planned for January.

Yushchenko says economic reforms are the best way for Ukraine to get out of its financial crisis.

The Ukrainian leader met with Buzek and European Commission President Jose Manuel Barroso on Thursday to plan for an EU-Ukraine summit in December where both sides are expected to agree on a new trade and aid pact.
