Paraguay's president has condemned the kidnapping of a rancher by a leftist guerrilla group, but is following the family's wishes not to intervene while they try to negotiate his release.Meanwhile farm owners are collecting money to help the family pay the reported $5 million ransom for rancher Fidel Zavala, who was abducted from his ranch near the Brazilian border Thursday by 14 members of the Paraguayan People's Army.
The Zavala family has warned against police intervention. President Fernando Lugo met with the family and promised a full investigastion, but said he'll follow the famiy's wishes.
There were 14 high-profile kidnappings in Paraguay between 2007 and 2008, nearly all without claims of responsibility, and none of the culprits has been apprehended.
