Venezuela's government is planning to expropriate two sugar mills that were closed because of production problems.Agriculture Minister Elias Jaua says the takeovers are necessary because the owners of the mills failed to follow proper legal procedures before closing them last month and laying off 3,000 employees.
Jaua told state television Wednesday that President Hugo Chavez authorized the expropriations to turn the mills into state-run companies.
The mills are located in Tachira and Zulia states.
Under Chavez, Venezuela has nationalized major players in the steel, electricity and oil sectors. His government seized control of another sugar mill in 2006.
