2 Russian police killed in Chechnya

The Interior Ministry in Russia's restive Chechnya says two policemen have been killed by gunmen who opened fire while the officers were checking the documents of bus passengers.

Ministry spokesman Magomed Deniyev said the police had stopped the bus on Monday about 25 kilometers (15 kilometers) north of Grozny, the Chechen capital, after receiving information that separatist rebels might be among the passengers.

Deniyev says the attackers fled into a nearby wooded area.

Although major fighting with rebels died down early this decade, Chechnya remains plagued by small rebel clashes and attacks on police and soldiers.

Bloodshed in Chechnya and neighboring Caucasus republics rose sharply during the summer.
