A federal judge has ruled that the U.S. government cannot continue an investigation into whether a Toledo charity should be deemed a terrorist organization.U.S. District Judge James Carr said Monday that the government must halt its efforts toward labeling KindHearts for Charitable Humanitarian Development Inc. a "specially designated global terrorist."
Carr granted the request made by KindHearts pending his determination of any penalties against the government per an August ruling. At that time, he said the government violated the Constitution by secretly freezing the charity's assets in 2006.
The U.S. government says the group has ties to the militant Islamic group Hamas.
KindHearts officials have denied being connected to any terrorist group.
