2 cops detained in Mexican army disappearance

Authorities in the northern Mexican city of Monterrey say two state police officers have been detained in connection with the disappearance of two army lieutenants a month ago.

A spokesman for the Nuevo Leon state prosecutor's office says the officers were suspended last week and are being investigated for organized-crime links. The officers were detained Tuesday. The official spoke on condition of anonymity because he is not authorized to discuss the case.

The lieutenants disappeared Sept. 25 when they were off duty, working as bodyguards.

A motive has not been determined. Soldiers deployed to Monterrey as part of President Felipe Calderon's crackdown on drug traffickers have rounded up dozens of police officers accused of working for organized crime.
