A police official says a Spanish lawyer accused of links to Basque separatist group ETA has been taken into custody in France. The official says Spain accuses Joseba Agudo Mancisidor of acting as a go-between for ETA leadership and militants hiding in Europe and South America. The official spoke Thursday on condition of anonymity because of police policy.
The lawyer was taken into custody Wednesday in the French border town of Hendaye on a European arrest warrant issued by Spain. In Spain, his office and home were also searched by police, who seized computer material.
ETA has killed more than 825 people since the late 1960s in its campaign for an independent Basque state in northern Spain and southwestern France.
