The Inter-American Development Bank has approved a $25 million loan to help the South American country of Guyana improve its roads.

The IDB estimates that travel time and road accidents around the capital of Georgetown will be cut by 20 percent.

The bank said Thursday that the loan will support a government program to rehabilitate 19 miles (30 kilometers) of roads. It will help fund repaving projects and the widening of a highway that serves Cheddi Jagan International Airport and a new cricket stadium.

The Washington D.C.-based bank finances economic and social projects in Latin America and the Caribbean.
