Sugar workers in Guyana are on strike for the fifth time this year to press for higher wages.Komal Chand of the Guyana Agricultural and General Workers Union says Friday's work stoppage involves more than 10,000 factory and field workers and has "crippled" the industry.
Talks between the state-run Guyana Sugar Corp. and the union broke down when they could not agree on salary increases. The government has ordered both sides to enter arbitration this weekend.
Sugar is the South American country's top export and accounts for a quarter of its gross domestic product.
Company chief Errol Hanoman says Guyana has already produced enough to meet its export quota for the European Union.
