Police in Suriname and Guyana are preparing to search for two fishermen who may have been captured by pirates off the South American coast.Guyana regional police commander George Vyphuis said Friday that two men who were injured in the attack told authorities that masked gunmen pulled up alongside their vessel Wednesday, shot at them with pellet guns and made off with about $30,000 in cash and equipment.
They are believed to be holding the two crew members.
Bandits increasingly have been targeting small fishing vessels along the Atlantic coasts of Guyana and Suriname, prompting lawmakers in both countries to consider tougher penalties for piracy.
