Macedonia's leader says the former Yugoslav republic will not change its name without holding a referendum.Macedonia had been at odds with Greece since gaining independence in 1991 since its neighbor also has a region called Macedonia and fears a potential territorial claim. U.N.-backed talks have failed to break the deadlock.
Prime Minister Nikola Gruevski said Friday his conservative government believes a referendum is a must, even though senior European Union officials have opposed one.
Gruevski made his statement after holding informal talks about that and other issues with new Greek Prime Minister George Papandreou on the sidelines of an EU summit in Brussels.
