3 suspected militants killed in southern Russia

A Russian government spokesman in a restive southern province near Chechnya says three suspected militants have been killed during a security sweep.

Mark Tolchinsky of the Interior Ministry's branch in the Caspian Sea province of Dagestan says the suspects were killed in the town of Khasavyurt near the border with Chechnya.

Tolchinsky said Monday the two men and a woman refused to surrender and were killed in fighting overnight.

Russia's North Caucasus region is plagued by violence stemming from wars between separatist Chechen rebels and the Russian government. There has been upsurge of bombings and other recent attacks in Chechnya, Ingushetia and Dagestan linked to Islamic rebels.
