Tajikistan set to free 10,000 prisoners
Associated Press
2009-11-02 08:38 PM
Tajikistan's parliament has approved a presidential-backed move to amnesty around 10,000 prisoners.

Candidates for the amnesty endorsed Monday will include women, juveniles, males aged over 55, severely disabled people and military veterans.

Inmates with several convictions and violent offenders will not be eligible for pardon.

The amnesty is expected to severely relieve chronic prison overcrowding. International observers say disease is rampant and nutrition standards are low in Tajikistan's jails.

The amnesty has been passed to mark the 15th anniversary of Tajikistan's constitution.
