Turkey wants military officers brought to trial
Associated Press

Turkey's prime minister says military leaders must identify officers involved in an alleged conspiracy to discredit his Islamic-oriented government.

Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan says the Turkish military should help prosecutors track down suspects in the armed forces. He made the comments Tuesday to ruling party lawmakers in parliament.

Prosecutors are investigating whether people in the military tried to damage the reputation of the government by portraying it as corrupt and in contradiction of its own Islamic principles.

A military officer allegedly provided prosecutors with a document outlining the plot.

Six officers were questioned last week over allegations that army personnel tried to destroy evidence.
