Francisco Ayala, a novelist, sociologist and one of Spain's leading scholars, has died. He was 103.

A spokeswoman for Ayala's foundation said he died Tuesday of natural causes at his home in Madrid.

Ayala won many prestige prizes in Spanish letters, from the Cervantes award in 1991 to the Prince of Asturias in 1998.

The Spanish Civil War of 1936-39 forced him into exile and he worked and lived in Argentina and the U.S. before returning to Spain.
