Opposition coalition formed in Sri Lanka

Sri Lanka's opposition parties have formed an alliance to challenge President Mahinda Rajapaksa's government in upcoming presidential and parliamentary elections.

Sri Lanka's main opposition United National Party and nine other smaller parties signed the coalition agreement Tuesday.

Opposition leader Ranil Wickremesinghe says the main aim of the alliance is to scrap the country's powerful presidency and increase the say of Parliament under a prime minister. Currently the prime minister's role is largely ceremonial.

The government has said it intends to call early elections. Parliament's current term ends in April next year.
