Taiwan's Han Tang Yuefu Music and Dance Ensemble will perform Nov. 3-8 at the Joyce Theater in New York, at a festival held by Carnegie Hall to celebrate Chinese culture. The company, which specializes in the traditional Nanguan music and Liyuan dance of the Tang Dynasty, is the only Taiwan group that has been invited to perform at the festival.
Han Tang Yuefu will present seven performances of The Feast of Han Xizai, a musical drama inspired by a Tang painting of the same name that depicts the story of the late Tang bon vivant Han Xizai.
The costumes and sets for the presentation were designed by Oscar-winning art director and designer Tim Yip.
The festival, titled Ancient Path, Modern Voices, is being held over three weeks until Nov. 10.
Han Tang Yuefu was founded in 1983. It was selected in 1995 as one of the "international performing arts" groups to receive support from Taiwan's Council for Cultural Affairs.
