Share prices close lower on local bourse

Taipei, Nov. 5 (CNA) Taiwan's share prices closed lower Thursday, with the weighted index, the market's key barometer, dropping 49.58 points, or 0.66 percent, to close at 7,417.46.

The local bourse opened at 7,471.61 and fluctuated between 7,481.58 and 7,412.74 during the day's trading session.

A total of 3.19 billion shares changed hands on market turnover of NT$86.93 billion (US$2.67 billion).

All eight major stock categories lost ground, with construction issues moving down the most at 1.8 percent. Paper and pulp issues declined 1.5 percent, banking and financial shares dropped 1.4 percent, foodstuff issues lost 1.3 percent, cement stocks and textile stocks both fell 1.2 percent, plastics and chemicals shares were down 0.9 percent, and machinery and electronics shares shed 0.4 percent.

Gainers outnumbered losers 1,533 to 929, with 225 stocks remaining unchanged.

Foreign institutional investors were net sellers of NT$1.35 billion-worth of shares.
