A U.S. Army psychiatrist accused of killing 13 people and wounding 30 at a Texas military base bought breakfast dressed in traditional Arab outfit hours before the shooting spree, CNN reported yesterday.CNN showed security video footage of Major Nidal Malik Hasan buying coffee and hashbrowns from a 7-Eleven convenience store on the base the morning of Thursday's shooting.
The video showed Hasan chatting with the owner, who is also of Arab origin and had previously served in the U.S. military, wearing a white dishdasha, a traditional Arab robe, and skullcap.
"He looked normal, came in had his hashbrowns and coffee as you see in the surveillance video," the owner, who was not identified, told CNN about Hasan's purchases at 6:20 a.m., about seven hours before the rampage.
In a separate surveillance video from the store on Tuesday, a man believed to be Hasan could be seen wearing medical uniform.
CNN quoted the owner as saying Hasan made near daily visits to his store and that one week before the Fort Hood massacre, the major had raised his fears of being sent to Iraq where he might have to fight fellow Muslims.
During his visits, Hasan would also ask whether the owner planned to attend yesterday's Muslim prayers, to which the owner would respond he was too busy
Hasan's relatives said that he had been harassed in the military because of his Muslim faith and did not want to go to Iraq.
The owner said he knew Hasan as "Major Nidal" and that through his brief talks with the psychiatrist, he learned the officer's background was Jordanian, though he did not speak Arabic well.
Hasan, who had been promoted from captain in May, was born in the U.S. to Palestinian parents, his cousin said.
The owner said Hasan did not wear a wedding ring and joked several times about whether the owner might know a potential bride.
Hasan was shot four times during the rampage at the Fort Hood base but survived and was being treated in intensive care.
