This is the third year in a row that Hsieh Yi Min has captured the coveted title. The 19-year-old Go ace now holds two of the three principal titles on Japan's professional women's Go scene.
In the Honinbo competition, Hsieh lost the first match but won the ensuing three games to retain her title.
Hsieh said she originally did not expect to emerge as the victor because her opponent, Kikuyo Aoki, was a veteran player.
Aoki, 41, is very brilliant and experienced, Hsieh said, adding that she learned much from her opponent throughout the four rounds of the contest.
"As a matter of fact, I encountered many tough challenges in the whole process and I believe that these demanding encounters will help me to perfect my skills, " Hsieh said, adding that she will continue her pursuit of excellence in order to secure a good rating in international competitions in the future.
Hsieh, from northern Taiwan's Miaoli County, began to play Go at the age of 5. She was the youngest player ever to enter Japan's professional Go circuit.
