The United Nations is running out of food for millions of starving Somalis in part because the United States is delaying some of its aid amid fears it could be intercepted by al-Qaida-linked militants in the east African nation.Starting last month, the U.N. World Food Program has had to cut rations by up to half for some people in the lawless and impoverished country. A spokesman for the Rome-based agency said Saturday that WFP will run out of supplies in December.
The U.S. State Department confirmed there were concerns that militants could get their hands on humanitarian assistance, but denied that food aid had been broken off and said it was working to resume some programs that had been delayed.
The U.S. provides about half of WFP's food aid to Somalia.
