Boks forwards Ralepelle, Steenkamp heading home

Stand-in captain Chiliboy Ralepelle and prop Gurthro Steenkamp are returning to South Africa after being injured during the Springboks' opening tour match against Leicester on Friday.

The Boks announced on Saturday that Ralepelle hurt his foot and needs to see a specialist, while Steenkamp injured his knee in their 22-17 loss at Welford Road.

Tighthead prop Jannie du Plessis also was doubtful with a hand injury.

Free State Cheetahs hooker Adriaan Strauss and prop Wian du Preez were summoned as replacements. Strauss played all five of his tests as a reserve last year, while du Preez was uncapped.

Meanwhile, prop Tendai "Beast" Mtawarira was cleared to join the Springboks tour after a waiver from the South African government on Saturday.

The South African Rugby Union overlooked protocols regarding the National Sport and Recreation Amendment Act of 2007, and fulfilled them by explaining to the Sports Ministry the selection of a non-South African.

Mtawarira, key to the British Lions and Tri-Nations series victories this year, was born in Zimbabwe.

"We're relieved that Beast will be available for selection for the Springboks against France in Toulouse on Friday," SARU president Oregan Hoskins said.
