France is celebrating the 20th anniversary of the fall of the Berlin Wall with a vast light show and concert gathering 27 cellists at the Place de la Concorde.Images, including the flags of the European Union, are being projected onto the 18th century buildings that ring the square.
The 27 cellists, led by Marc Coppey, are playing atop towering pillars scattered throughout the darkened square. They symbolize the 27 European Union nations and pay homage to cellist Mstislav Rostropovich, who played Bach suites below the crumbling Berlin Wall in 1989.
The program, backed up by choirs, includes work by Bach, Gabriel Faure and Alfred Schnittke. Paris' musical festivities Monday coincided with a concert in Berlin at the foot of the Brandenburg Gate.
