A reputed senior Irish Republican Army veteran has lost his property empire and cash held in several bank accounts after British anti-racketeering detectives successfully applied to seize his assets. The Belfast High Court accepted the application from Britain's Serious Organized Crime Agency against Sean "The Surgeon" Hughes and his wife, Annette. It ruled Tuesday that Hughes used money from fraud and tax evasion to buy at least a dozen Northern Ireland properties, three of which he sold.
Police searched several of the properties Tuesday.
The 47-year-old Hughes has been identified by the leader of Northern Ireland's government, Peter Robinson, as a longtime IRA commander involved in many of the outlawed group's biggest attacks from the late 1970s to mid-1990s.
