Czech Prime Minister Jan Fisher says his government is proposing European Affairs Minister Stefan Fule to become the country's candidate in the next European Commission.Fule had previously served as the Czech ambassador to Britain, Lithuania and NATO. He was a Communist Party member before the fall of communism 20 years ago.
He replaces Vladimir Spidla, the employment affairs commissioner but it still not clear what portfolio the country could have.
Fischer announced Fule's nomination on Tuesday. It is not clear who will take his government post.
Jose Manuel Barroso, who will continue as European Commission president, will assign positions once all 27 candidates have been nominated.
