Bulgaria nominates foreign minister for EU post
Associated Press
2009-11-11 06:33 PM
Bulgarian government says Foreign Minister Rumyana Zheleva has been nominated as the country's new EU commissioner.

Zheleva was appointed foreign minister in July following the landslide victory of Prime Minister Boiko Borisov's center-right party, GERB.

A former lawmaker at the European Parliament, Zheleva will replace Meglena Kuneva, Bulgaria's first EU Commissioner who was responsible for consumer affairs.

A government statement Wednesday did not say who would replace Zheleva as foreign minister.

European Union leaders will meet Nov. 19 to appoint the 27-nation bloc's president and foreign policy chief. The 27 commissioners, one for each country, will be assigned once all candidates have been nominated.
