Austrian bishops have criticized a recent court ruling against the display of crucifixes in Italian public schools.

The bishops, in comments conveyed by Cardinal Christoph Schoenborn, say rulings such as that of the European Court of Human Rights are a reminder of the "religiously hostile totalitarian political systems of the 20th century."

Schoenborn spoke Friday at a news conference after a meeting of Austrian bishops that covered a wide range of issues, including the Strasbourg-based court's finding.

The Nov. 3 decision could force a review of the use of religious symbols in government-run schools across Europe.
