Puerto Rican legislators have struck down a law that prohibits ownership of pit bulls. The Association of Medical Veterinarians estimates that more than 3,800 pit bulls have been euthanized in less than two years as mandated by an amended 1971 law that prohibits owning, importing and reproducing such dogs.
Association spokeswoman Many Guerra said Friday that more than 40,000 pit bulls exist in Puerto Rico.
It is unclear how many people have been attacked by that breed. Police spokeswoman Maria del Pilar Bon said the department does not keep those kind of statistics.
Legislators say that if Gov. Luis Fortuno approves the proposal, they would consider a law that would penalize owners of dogs that attack or kill someone.
