Jordan's police spokesman says a second citizen has died this week after being beaten by a police officer.

Fakhri Kreishan, 47, has been in a coma since Thursday after a clash between police and residents in the southern city of Maan. Locals had attempted to prevent a suspect from being arrested.

Police spokesman Maj. Mohammed al-Khatib said Sunday the officer suspected of beating Kreishan has been arrested and will be tried in a police court.

Al-Khatib said it was the second such death in the past week. Sadem al-Saud died in an Amman hospital last Sunday, three weeks after also being put into a coma by a severe police beating.

International human rights organization have criticized Jordan for systematic abuse in detention facilities.
