EU leaders in flurry of phone calls to agree posts
Associated Press

European officials and envoys expect arduous talks between EU leaders this week to decide who will be named the bloc's new president and foreign policy chief.

Sweden's EU affairs minister Cecilia Malmstrom says her Prime Minister Fredrik Reinfeldt has already led "many rounds" of phone calls between his EU counterparts to narrow the field of candidates for the post.

The top jobs are to be agreed to at a special summit on Thursday in Brussels.

EU ministers were informally discussing the negotiations on filling the posts on Monday.

Mentioned for top EU jobs are former British leader Tony Blair, Herman Van Rompuy, Jan Peter Balkenende and Jean-Claude Juncker _ the Belgian, Dutch and Luxembourg leaders respectively.
