Macedonia plans to remove the last symbol of its Communist past from its national insignia, 18 years after the country peacefully split from the former Yugoslavia.Lawmakers have voted 80 to 18 to eliminate the five-point red star that has crowned Macedonia's national coat of arms.
Macedonia's emblem bears the sun rising over a lakeside mountain, framed by garlands of wheat, tobacco leaves and poppy buds.
Monday's vote followed a proposal by conservative Prime Minister Nikola Gruevski, who said Macedonia needed to break with its Communist past.
