Racing beats Estudiantes 1-0 in upset

Pablo Luguercio scored an early goal as Racing Club held on for a 1-0 win over Estudiantes La Plata on Monday in the Argentine Apertura tournament.

Gimnasia La Plata won 4-1 at home against Huracan, while Rosario Central and Lanus drew 0-0 in the day's other Round 14 matches.

Banfield and Newell's Old Boys top the table with 32 points, four ahead of Colon de Santa Fe in third place. Estudiantes has now played a game extra and lies fourth with 26 points.

Luguercio scored the winner in the 5th minute for Racing, which boosted its fight against relegation with the win against Estudiantes, registering only its second win of the Apertura season.

Gimnasia also eased relegation worries with the 4-1 win over Huracan. Sebastian Romero broke down the right and teed up Jose Vizcarra to open the scoring for Gimnasia in the 19th minute.

Diego Rodriguez scored an eye-catching equalizer for Huracan from a free kick in the 33rd, but Gimnasia went back in front barely a minute later when Romero pounced on indecisive defending to beat Gaston Monzon in the Huracan goal.

Marcos Perez scored a third in the 74th minute and Denis Stracqualursi made the game safe with Gimnasia's fourth in the 81st.

In the day's final match, sixth-placed Rosario Central missed the chance to cut the gap at the top, drawing 0-0 at home against mid-table Lanus.

In other round 14 results played on Friday, Saturday and Sunday it was: Chacarita Juniors 0, Newells Old Boys 1; Tigre 2, Godoy Cruz de Mendoza 0; Banfield 3, Velez Sarsfield 0; Colon de Santa Fe 2, Argentinos Juniors 0; San Lorenzo 0, Independiente 3; River Plate 3, Atletico Tucuman 1; Arsenal de Sarandi 1, Boca Juniors 1.
