The European Union is donating an additional euro2 million ($3 million) to help search for the remains of missing Greek and Turkish Cypriots on divided Cyprus.Androulla Kaminara, the top EU official on Cyprus, says the donation will speed up efforts to locate the remains of 1,460 Greek Cypriots and 500 Turkish Cypriots who vanished in ethnic violence decades ago.
She made the announcement Tuesday.
The EU is the biggest donor to the United Nations-led Committee on Missing Persons. Since 2006, CMP experts have returned the remains of 186 identified persons from both communities to their families.
Cyprus was split into a Greek Cypriot south and a Turkish Cypriot north in 1974 when Turkey invaded after a coup by supporters of union with Greece.
