Lievremont makes 12 changes for Samoa match

France coach Marc Lievremont says he is taking a "calculated risk" by making 12 changes to the side that beat South Africa for Saturday's match against Samoa, handing first caps to winger Benjamin Fall and flanker Alexandre Lapandry.

France stood up well to South Africa's renowned physical might in a 20-13 win Saturday, but Lievremont wants to get the rest of his squad involved before choosing a stronger team to face New Zealand next week.

"We're taking a calculated risk. Keeping the same players who started against South Africa meant there was a greater chance that complacency would set in," Lievremont said Tuesday. "There are 12 changes, but only five in terms of the team that finished the match against South Africa. The replacements showed how strong the squad is."

Center Yannick Jauzion returns to win his 62nd cap, while veteran prop Sylvain Marconnet replaces Thierry Dusautoir as captain.

"We took three things into consideration," Lievremont added at France's Marcoussis training camp. "The first was physical freshness, the second was removing any risk of complacency. Finally, the most important thing is that the players are all close to having the same level."

Only winger Vincent Clerc, scorer of France's only try against South Africa, flyhalf Francois Trinh-Duc and backrower Louis Picamoles remain from the team starting Friday's match in Toulouse.

Lievremont also said he needed to ensure his team was physically ready to play the mighty All Blacks the following weekend.

"The shadow of New Zealand is looming and we will need to be fresh against the All Blacks," he said.

Marconnet, meanwhile, is pleasantly surprised to be handed the captain's armband.

"It's obviously a great honor, even though it is on a part time basis," Marconnet said. "I've waited 11 years to be the captain of the French team."
