Safety officials in the northwest Swiss canton (state) of Basel-Landschaft say an infant has become the country's first fatality from swine flu.Local daily Basler Zeitung reported Wednesday on its Web site that the 5-month-old child died several days ago.
It quoted the top cantonal health official, Dominik Schorr, as saying test results Tuesday showed the infant had died of the pandemic flu strain.
The health ministry said last week that the number of swine flu cases in Switzerland is rising "exponentially."
The World Health Organization says over 6,250 people worldwide have died of swine flu since the outbreak began in spring.
