Italy has denounced the expulsion of an Italian Greenpeace activist and a journalist from Indonesia, after they attended an anti-deforestation protest in the country.Indonesian authorities said last week they were deporting several foreign Greenpeace activists for joining the protest in the Kampar peninsula. The protest sought to draw attention to the massive destruction of Indonesia's peatland forests ahead of a key U.N. climate conference in Denmark.
The Italian foreign ministry formally complained Wednesday to the Indonesian Embassy in Rome and asked that the rights of journalist Raimondo Bultrini and Greenpeace activist Chiara Campione be guaranteed.
Greenpeace had criticized the Italian government's response to the expulsions.
