The police chief in the Bahamas will step down on Jan. 4 because of a new department rule making retirement mandatory at age 60.Prime Minister Hubert Ingraham announced the impending retirement of 63-year-old Reginald Ferguson in a statement issued late Wednesday.
Ferguson did not immediately return calls Thursday. He has worked for the Royal Bahamas Police Force for 44 years, the last two in the top job.
Ingraham says the next police commissioner of the Atlantic archipelago off Florida will be appointed in coming weeks.
