Cambodia cracks down on siren use to halt traffic
Associated Press
2009-11-20 05:09 PM
Cambodia is limiting the use of traffic-halting sirens by top officials to cut noise and congestion in the crowded capital.

Officials use the sirens on their vehicles to stop other traffic when they cross Phnom Penh. Ministry of Interior official Him Yan said Friday under a new rule, only Prime Minister Hun Sen, the Senate and National Assembly presidents and top members of the royal family will be allowed to do so.

That means 10 Cabinet ministers will be stuck in traffic jams like everyone else in the city of 1.4 million people.

Congestion has worsened as more prosperous residents replace their motorbikes with cars. Accidents are also on the rise, killing about 1,000 people each year across the country, many of them in the capital.
